Silt fences are temporary fabric used to retain sediment and control erosion on construction sites. Sediment such as sand, silt, and clay are considered as pollutants in storm water runoff systems.These fences are made out of synthetic filtration fabric, usually geo-textile filter fabric, woven together to create sheets of material that offer incredible strength and a good level of permeability.

Silt fences are more effective when the fabric is buried along with the wooden stakes. The fence should be berried quarter way in the ground to ensure erosion control. Periodic inspection of the installation must also be done to ensure efficiency throughout the duration of the project.
